Boys basketball: Downers Grove South pulls away from Yorkville

Updated: February 25, 2013 11:10PM

Downers Grove South pulled away late in the fourth quarter to defeat Yorkville 52-43 in Monday’s Class 4A Wheaton Warrenville South Regional quarterfinal.

Robert Mara led the Mustangs with 17 points while Jordan Cannon and Scott McNellis added 10 points each.

“I’m not making excuses. Downers Grove South played a better game at the end,” Yorkville coach Dan McGuire said. “It was a great game to be a part of though. Unfortunately we didn’t finish at the end.”

Yorkville (12-15) started far better than it finished, jumping to a 17-12 lead after one quarter. Taylor Carter scored 11 of his game-high 19 points in the quarter but wouldn’t score again until he connected from beyond the three-point arc to open the fourth quarter.

The Foxes only trailed 25-22 at halftime but found themselves down 32-24 midway through the third quarter. They drew even at 34-all on Carter’s three-pointer with 7:38 remaining.

Turnovers plagued the Foxes, especially in the second half. They took an aggressive approach to beating the Mustangs’ press, but often misfired on their passes or failed to convert layups.

“We made hustle mistakes, it wasn’t like we were just laying back,” McGuire said. “I was proud of how they played. They came here not to hang out, but to win the game and that showed throughout.”

Carter split a pair of free throws to give Yorkville a 39-38 lead with 4:50 left, but McNellis drained a jumper with 4:05 left to give the Mustangs the lead for good.

Downers Grove South could’ve put the game away, but allowed the Foxes to hang around for awhile via poor free throw shooting. The Mustangs converted just 4-of-10 from the charity stripe during the final two minutes.

“It seemed like the team that had the last run was going to win,” McGuire said. “You have to give Downers Grove South credit though. They made some plays when they needed to make them.”

Downers Grove South will face No. 4 seed West Aurora at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
