The finish to Sunday’s game with Thornton Fractional South at the Bob Hambric Shootout at T.F. North may help to explain how the season has been going for coach Wendell Jeffries and his East Aurora Tomcats.
DeJon Talbert’s game-winning 3-point shot beat the buzzer and went through the rim. Unfortunately for East, it didn’t count because the ball bounced high off the rim and glanced off the supporting guide wire attached to the backboard before falling through the net.
“It would have counted if it hadn’t hit the (wire) but it was clear it hit it,” said a disappointed Jeffries.
The result was a 55-53 victory for T.F. South over the Tomcats, who fall to 3-14 on the season.
The Rebels (7-8) opened a 27-19 lead in the first half before the Tomcats got back into it in the second, slowly whittling the deficit.
Jonathan Villezcas led East with 19 points and Tyree Willis, who had three treys in the fourth, finished with 17.
