PONTIAC — West Aurora’s Josh McAuley wasn’t an underclassman superstar. His name didn’t even start bubbling up around the state until last year’s Pontiac Holiday Tournament.

The 6-7 senior has been steadily improving since then, and Thursday in the first round against Lockport he announced his arrival in stunning fashion, blocking five shots in the first quarter of the Blackhawks’ 69-22 win over Lockport.

McAuley finished with seven blocks in 17 minutes of play. He scored 15 points and shot 7-for-10 from the field.

“I’m a defensive player,” McAuley said. “I just tried to go after the ball.”

The game got out of hand early, with McAuley’s swats helping West Aurora to a 17-4 lead after just one quarter.

“I thought we were intimidated by (West Aurora’s) physical play,” Lockport coach Lawrence Thompson Jr. said. “You have to have patience when you are overmatched like that, and we didn’t.”

Jontrel Walker scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed nine boards for the Blackhawks (8-1). Sophomore Roland Griffin showed impressive potential, adding 11 points and four rebounds.

“We’ve got very good chemistry this year,” Walker said. “We’re just like brothers off the court and I think that’s showing on the court.”

Grover Anderson led the Porters (4-8) with six points. Lockport shot just 10-for-44 from the field.

West Aurora will face St. Charles North in the quarterfinals on Friday and Lockport will play Waukegan in the consolation bracket.
