Women’s basketball

Chiefs Invitational — Waubonsee Community College lost 54-50 to Parkland College in the championship game of its own invitational Saturday afternoon. The Chiefs (1-1) missed 11 of their 27 free throw attempts in the loss. Karla Vietinghoff had 17 points and eight rebounds for WCC. Teammate Emma Darby added 17 points and seven rebounds.

In Friday’s semifinal action, the Chiefs defeated Northwestern University’s Club team, 61-51. Vietinghoff and Emily Magee scored 14 points each in the win. Katilyn Rosa added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Vietinghoff, Darby, Magee and Rosa were named to the all-tournament team.

Men’s basketball

Waubonsee 80, Northwestern Club 61 — On Friday, the Chiefs (1-0) outscored their opponents 41-28 in the second half to pull away for a season-opening win. Ronnie Smith and Tramell Weathersby scored 11 points each for WCC. Weathersby pulled down a team-best seven rebounds, while Smith dished out five assists. Reggie Chambliss chipped in 10 points.
