Saturday’s preview: Alma at Aurora University

Updated: October 15, 2012 9:36AM

1 p.m. Saturday, Vago FieldLast week:

Alma was defeated by Illinois Wesleyan, 53-7. AU was idle.

Alma outlook: Don’t be swayed by the IWU score. Alma trailed just 10-7 at halftime before being steamrolled after intermission. The Scots have a junior quarterback in Jarrett Lester who has completed 22 of 45 passes for 235 yards and a good senior receiver in Nate Wade (8 catches, 91 yards). Alma, like AU, is young in a lot of key areas.

AU outlook: The Spartans took a week off to get back to fundamentals and shake off their 49-13 loss to IWU. The Spartans trailed only 14-13 with just over five minutes left to halftime before the Titans scored three touchdowns. Quarterback Jimmy Bevell did throw for 160 yards in the opener and the Spartans have uncovered a promising freshman wideout in Michael Beasley-Hart (4 catches, 107 yards). AU’s ground game could get a boost with senior Brandon Trujillo, who missed the opener, ready to go.

Quote: “We’re almost of mirror of each other. We both have areas that we do good at and areas where we don’t do good at. I see it as an even game.” — Mark Walsh, AU head coach

Next week: The Spartans play their final nonconference game when they travel to Decatur to face Millikin. AU opens Northern Athletics Conference play at Maranatha Baptist on Sept. 29.
