SANDWICH — The City Council has approved putting a referendum on the November ballot on prohibiting open burning of landscape waste.
At present Sandwich city residents are allowed to burn leaves, but the leaves must be dry and must be burned on the resident’s property, not city streets. There are several other restrictions including how and when the landscape waste is burned.
Every fall, city officials receive complaints from residents about the heavy smoke in the city.
The council also intends to seek a referendum on whether the city should have the authority to arrange for the supply of electricity for residential and small commercial retail customers.
