Kids hit by glass when school bus hits stop sign

Three children were hit by flying glass Monday morning when their school bus ran into a stop sign in Kendall County.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to the area of Galena Road and Highland Drive in Bristol Township at 6:47 a.m. Monday on a report of a bus striking a stop sign at the intersection. Police said the bus was making a turn onto Galena from Highland when it hit the sign, breaking two windows on the bus.

The three students on the bus were hit by flying glass, police said. They were examined by Bristol Kendall Fire Department paramedics at the scene and did not require hospitalization, police said.

No tickets were issued.

Aurora

Aurora police recently took two unrelated reports for driverless cars in crashes.

The first crash happened at 5:24 p.m. Friday near Lake Street and Lawndale Avenue. Michael Lopez parked his car and then went into a business to fill out paperwork, police said. The car continued its journey without Lopez at the wheel, hitting another car, rolling slowly through a red light, going over a curb and then hitting a retaining wall on the other side of the street, police said. When an officer got to the car, it was still in drive. Lopez was charged with parking a motor vehicle illegally. Police refused to release his age or address.

At 5:55 a.m. Saturday, about $500 damage was done when a car with no driver in it hit a garage in the 700 block of Clearwood Court, police said. The car had been reported stolen earlier, police said. When officers checked the car, they found a brick that may have been used to push down the gas pedal, police said.

Four cars on the near East Side of Aurora were vandalized early Friday morning, police said. About $250 damage was done when someone smashed the window of a car in the 700 block of Talma Street sometime before 2:16 a.m. Friday, police said. About $200 damage was done when someone smashed windows of cars in the 500 block of Talma Street, 800 block of Watson Street and 500 block of Simms Street early Friday morning, police said. It was not clear whether anything was taken from any of the cars.

Ariel Belton, 18, 800 block of North Lake Street, Aurora, was charged with felony theft last week in the 800 block of North Lake Street, police said Monday.

Oscar Tochimani was charged with drunken driving and no insurance after a crash at 10:31 p.m. Friday near Orchard Road and Coach and Surrey Lane, police said. No one was injured in the crash. Police refused to release Tochimani’s age or address.

A mountain bike, worth $1,250, was stolen from the 1700 block of Fredericksburg Lane between 1:20 and 1:30 p.m. Saturday, police said.

Batavia

Daniel Hernandez, 24, of Elburn, was charged with drunken driving, speeding, no valid driver’s license, no rear registration lamp and improper lane use at 12:58 a.m. Saturday in the 300 block of Main Street, Batavia police said. A passenger, Nicholas Sennstrom, 24, 11000 block of Winterberry, Plainfield, was charged with unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

A bank bag containing an undisclosed amount of cash and checks marked “for deposit only” was stolen from a vehicle parked in the 1900 block of West Fabyan Parkway, Batavia police said. There were no signs of forced entry.

Geneva

Rodrigo Cano, 28, 400 block of Brittany Court, Geneva, was charged last week with drunken driving and speeding in the 1200 block of West State Street, Geneva police said. Cano also was charged with failure to signal.

Kendall County

Mark Haeger, 51, 10000 block of Dawn Avenue, Naperville, was charged last week with drunken driving and driving too fast for conditions near Harvey Road and Route 30 in rural Oswego, Kendall County sheriff’s deputies said. Deputies were dispatched to the area on a report of a vehicle in a ditch.

Adam Duckett, 23, 3400 block of Stewart Road, Oswego, was treated and released from Rush-Copley Medical Center after his vehicle hit a telephone box, mail box and two bushes at 11:15 a.m. Friday in the 2800 block of Harvey Road, the sheriff’s office said. Duckett was charged with improper lane use, police said.

LaSalle County

Curtis Fuller, 21, 300 block of North Church Street, Millington, was charged with drunken driving, improper lane use and disobeying a stop sign at 2:34 a.m. Saturday near 29th and 4650th roads, the sheriff’s office said.

Becky Lueken, 60, of Leland, was treated and released after her car hit a horse at 5:45 a.m. Sunday on East 2750th Road near Northville Township, police said. The horse died.

St. Charles

A robber wearing a ski mask and armed with a pair of scissors held up a 7-Eleven store in St. Charles early Sunday morning, police said. St. Charles police said the suspect entered the convenience store at Main Street and Dunham Road at 3:17 a.m. The man demanded money, cigarettes and lottery tickets from the clerk. The clerk was not hurt. Loss was approximately $560, police said.

Yorkville

Two televisions, worth $1,300, were taken from a home in the 500 block of West Hydraulic Drive between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, police said. Also, between 12:30 and 4:05 p.m. Friday someone broke into a home in the 300 block of West Fox Street and stole various items. No loss estimate was given on the Friday burglary.

Two sets of white reindeer were damaged recently in Yorkville. According to police, sometime before 8:55 p.m. Friday about $30 damage was done to a set in the 4000 block of Brady Street. Then, sometime before 8:15 p.m. Sunday in the 2300 block of Iroquois Lane, about $30 damage was done to a second set, police said.
