Vandals strike Batavia bulldog sculptures

Batavia police said two fiberglass sculptures of bulldogs were damaged on the Fourth of July.

According to police, someone knocked the cigar out of the mouth of “Sergeant Batavia” on the Donovan Bridge in the 0-99 block of East Wilson Street. Someone also knocked the smoking pipe out of the mouth of the “Sherlock Bones” sculpture near South River and East Wilson streets, police said.

The bulldogs were installed in early June throughout the downtown as part of a community-wide cultural arts initiative. Twenty-five fiberglass sculptures of bulldogs were painted by artists. No damage estimates were released.

Aurora

Bryan Jones, 36, 2200 block of Hudson Circle, Aurora, was charged with drunken driving, leaving the scene of an accident and improper lane use at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at his home, police said.

Paulino Ledezma, 30, 1300 block of West Indian Trail, Aurora, was charged with felonies possession of a controlled substance and leaving the scene of an injury accident as well as misdemeanors drunken driving, illegal possession of liquor, improper lane use, no insurance and suspended license at 2:21 a.m. Saturday in the 1600 block of Premium Outlets Boulevard, police said.

Daniel Hankins, 20, 1000 block of West Galena Boulevard, Aurora, was charged with felony forgery and misdemeanor resisting a peace officer at 1 p.m. Friday in the 1900 block of West Galena Boulevard, police said.

Roque Leal-Coronel, 31, 800 block of East Galena Boulevard, Aurora, was charged with felony knowingly possessing a fraudulent driver’s license at 4:20 p.m. Friday in the 800 block of North Lake Street, police said.

Jack Davis, 33, 300 block of North River Street, Aurora, was charged with felonies possession of a controlled substance and delivery of 1 to 15 grams of cocaine as well as misdemeanors disregarding a stop sign, failure to signal, aggravated assault and knowingly damaging property at 7:59 p.m. Friday in the 200 block of Westgate Drive, police said.

Laura Botello, 19, 600 block of Morton Avenue, Aurora, was charged with felony misuse of a credit card at 11 a.m. Saturday at her home, police said.

Ejub Ramic, 56, 500 block of Grand Avenue, Aurora, was charged with drunken driving at 2:09 a.m. Sunday near Illinois and Grand avenues, police said.

Miqwon Holmes, 22, of Chicago, was charged with felonies criminal damage to property and criminal trespass to a residence at 1:40 p.m. Saturday in the 400 block of Dayward Court, police said.

Omar Gallegos, 29, 300 block of Superior Street, Aurora, was charged with felony aggravated stalking as well as misdemeanors violating an order of protection, criminal damage to property and domestic battery at 3:50 a.m. Saturday in the 200 block of Trask Street, police said.

Alexander Meza, 40, 1100 block of North Ohio Street, Aurora, was charged with drunken driving and failure to reduce speed at 3:29 a.m. Sunday in the 1000 block of Solfisburg Avenue, police said.

Sergio Perez, 19, 400 block of South Broadway, Aurora, and Lucas Perez, 18, 400 block of South Broadway, Aurora, were charged with felony unlawful use of a weapon and violation of the Firearm Owner’s Identification Card Act as well as misdemeanor illegal transportation of liquor at 1:40 a.m. Sunday near Spring Street and Lincoln Avenue, police said.

Aurora police took at least seven reports of retail theft at the Westfield Fox Valley mall during the holiday weekend, according to reports. In the cases where police identified a suspect, they were all charged with misdemeanors, police said. Earrings, clothing, sunglasses and shoes were among the items stolen.

Cash, prescription drugs and a purse, worth $10,095, were taken from a car in the 3200 block of Longwood Lane between 8:30 p.m. Thursday and 10:30 a.m. Friday, police said.

About $1,500 damage was done when someone scratched the trunk and broke the mirrors off a car in the 700 block of Spring Street between 3 and 4:03 a.m. Sunday, police said.

A mountain bike worth $1,000 was stolen from the 2200 block of Nordic Court between June 15 and Sunday, police said.

Someone may have been injured in a two-car crash at 12:20 p.m. Monday near Palace Street and Lakelawn Boulevard, police said. Richard Frey was charged with disobeying a stop sign, police said. The other driver was not ticketed. Aurora police refused to release Frey’s age or address, nor say whether anyone was injured in the crash.

Batavia

Twelve 55-gallon steel drums of racing fuel worth $5,000 were stolen from the 1300 block of South River Street sometime before Tuesday, police said.

DeKalb County

David Rohbock, 57, Geneva, was injured when his vehicle rolled over at 1:50 p.m. Sunday near Shabbona and Lee roads in DeKalb County. Sheriff’s officials said Rohbock lost control of his vehicle while entering a turn on Shabbona Road. He was treated for minor injuries at Kishwaukee Community Hospital, police said.

Kendall County

The Kendall County sheriff’s office responded to two unusual calls Monday. At 1:45 p.m., Michael Corcoran, 42, 2500 block of Plainfield Road, Joliet, was charged with battery for throwing a full beer can at a 52-year-old Wheaton man in the 800 block of VanEmmon Road, police said. The victim suffered minor injuries when the can hit him in the face, police said. In an unrelated incident at 5:22 p.m., Eric Bachman, 38, 0-99 block of Partridge Square, Oswego, was charged with domestic battery for picking up a 33-year-old Oswego woman and throwing her into a canoe in the 12600 block of River Road, police said.

LaSalle County

Nathaniel Hesselink, 23, Oswego, was charged with drunken driving at 12:25 a.m. Sunday in the 2900 block of North 2553rd Road, the sheriff’s office said.

Montgomery

Nereida Nelson, 30, 2000 block of West Illinois Avenue, Aurora, was charged with drunken driving, illegal transportation of alcohol and no valid driver’s license at 10 p.m. June 29, Montgomery police said Tuesday.

Erin Johnson, 23, 0-99 block of Golden Larcy Court, Naperville, was charged with drunken driving, no insurance and improper lane use at 2 a.m. Sunday near Routes 30 and 31, police said.

Patrick Fischer, 26, 900 block of Canyon Trail, Yorkville, was charged with drunken driving after he was found sleeping in the back seat of a car parked partially on the road at 2 a.m. Monday near Hill Avenue and Montgomery Road, police said.

Oswego

Thirteen teens were arrested at 1:12 a.m. Sunday at a party on the 500 block of Crystal Court, police said. The teens were accused of underage drinking.

Someone burglarized a house in the 400 block of Greenview Court between Saturday and 2 p.m. Monday, police said. Total loss was $4,000.

Sandwich

Blanca Ortega, 27, 100 block of West Pleasant Street, Sandwich, was charged with drunken driving after a crash at 10:15 p.m. Thursday near Church and Terry streets, police said. Ortega was treated and released from Valley West Community Hospital in Sandwich, police said.

Yorkville

Sheryl Leitner, 53, 1800 block of Country Hills Drive, Yorkville, was charged with drunken driving, revoked license, no insurance, failure to signal and improper lane use at 10 a.m. Sunday near Schoolhouse and Identa roads, police said.
