AURORA — Council members signaled wide support for Kristina “Tina” Bohman as the city’s next 1st Ward alderman Monday.
Bohman’s appointment will be considered for approval at a special council meeting Tuesday, immediately following the 5 p.m. Committee of the Whole meeting at City Hall. Weisner announced his selection for the seat late Thursday.
Seven of the 11 sitting aldermen confirmed Monday that they would vote to approve the mayor’s choice for the seat. They were: Aldermen Bob O’Connor, At-large; Richard Irvin, At-large; Juany Garza, 2nd Ward, Bill Donnell, 4th Ward; John “Whitey” Peters, 5th Ward; Mike Saville, 6th Ward and Rick Mervine, 8th Ward.
Bohman will likely represent the 1st Ward at least until the next general election is held in April 2015. A former Aurora community resources coordinator, Bohman was one of eight candidates who applied to be appointed to the post.
Mervine said Bohman has worked incredibly hard as a volunteer and her work as a community resources coordinator serves as great preparation for her role as a decision maker on City Council.
“I’m very, very pleased with her background, commitment and capabilities,” Mervine said.
Alderman Ted Mesiacos, 3rd Ward, said he tends not to make decisions on votes until City Council meetings. But Bohman is a very strong candidate, he said.
Saville, who himself was first appointed to City Council, said that it’s rare for sitting aldermen to question a mayor’s aldermanic appointment. Bohman will be the eighth alderman to be appointed to an aldermanic seat since Saville was appointed in 1985, he said.
“I think one person voted against (my appointment), but his friend was put in the hat, too,” Saville said. “Our only role is to say ‘yes’ or ‘no,’ and for the most part, it’s been unanimous.”
Saville said that he’s known Bohman, a very active member of the NorthEast Neighbors group, for decades.
“There were some very outstanding candidates out there and I think Tina was one of them,” he said.
After Bohman is confirmed, Weisner will next appoint Bohman to a Council committee, according to O’Connor, who serves as chairman of the Finance Committee. Weisner can appoint Bohman to the vacant Finance Committee seat or realign the committees, he said.
“Which it will be, I don’t have the answer to that,” O’Connor said.
Because former Alderman Abby Schuler, 1st Ward, resigned 18 months before the next 1st Ward general election, Weisner picked her replacement.
Aldermen Scheketa Hart-Burns, 7th Ward; Edward Bugg, 9th Ward; and Lynne Johnson, 10th Ward; could not be reached Monday.
