YORKVILLE — Residents here have been hungry for first-run movies in town ever since the former Countryside Theater closed.

So it’s fitting that the grand opening of the new NCG Yorkville Cinemas will be Nov. 21 for the first run of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.”

Advance tickets are already on sale now for the movie at the NCG website, at http://www.ncgmovies.com/yorkville/, and officials have said the company will host a free open house in the movie building the day before, Nov. 20.

Jeff Geiger, NCG Cinemas president, said for the open house, the theater would run three or four older movies. There will be free popcorn, free soft drinks with seating on a first come, first served basis, according to the NCG website.

The 10-screen theater began construction in March, on almost the exact site of the old Countryside theater. The 38,500-square-foot theater will include a giant screen called Xtreme, that will include at times 3D presentations, and Dolby Atmos sound, according to the company’s website.

City officials have been hoping that the theater will be the beginning of redevelopment of the entire former Countryside Shopping Center site. The shopping center was torn down in 2005 to be redeveloped, but the economy killed plans of a previous developer.
