The driver involved in a fatal crash Tuesday night on Interstate 88 near Aurora has been identified as Amy L. Luepkas, 46, of Oregon, Ill.
At about 7:14 p.m. Tuesday, Luepkas’ SUV was hit by a semi truck which crossed the median on I-88 between Butterfield Road and Route 56, according to Illinois State Police.
The truck was traveling east when it went through the grassy center median and into the westbound lanes of traffic, where it struck the SUV head-on, Illinois State Police Tollway District Master Sergeant Greg Minx said.
The semi stopped in a ditch on the right side of the westbound lanes and caught fire, Minx said.
Westbound lanes were closed for more than five hours following the crash until they were reopened at 1:02 a.m., state police said.
The Kane County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday performed an autopsy on the victim, and the preliminary cause of death was determined to be directly related to the motor vehicle crash.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
