Jewel-Osco will shut down one of its Aurora stores this month.
The Jewel-Osco located at 1270 N. Lake St. in Aurora will shutter its doors on Feb. 15.
The well-known food store and pharmacy retailer announced Monday that it will be closing the Aurora location in addition to two other Chicago area Jewel-Osco stores.
In a press release, the current “competitive climate” and “challenging economic environment” were given as reasons for the store closings. About 300 employees will be affected by the closings, however, they will have the opportunity to transfer to other Jewel-Osco locations, according to the press release.
Just over 100 associates are employed at the Lake Street location. A store manager would not comment on the closing.
“Unfortunately the store was not performing as well as the company would have liked,” said Karen May, communications manager for Jewel-Osco.
The other two store closings are in Niles and Chicago. The Chicago store, 3940 E. 106th St., closes after 45 years of operation. The Aurora store was open for 23 years.
The press release added that “Jewel-Osco would like to thank all of the stores’ customers for their patronage and invites them to shop the company’s other locations.”
Jewel-Osco operates stores at 1952 W. Galena Blvd. and 1157 Eola Road in Aurora.
Jewel started in Chicago as a door-to-door coffee service in 1899, and now has more than 170 Jewel-Osco locations in Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana.
