AURORA — Community volunteer and photographer Jose Torres has been named the 2012 Pete Perez Award winner by the Aurora Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board.
Torres will be honored for his leadership and impact on the city’s Hispanic community at the advisory board’s 11th annual community breakfast, set for 7:30 a.m. Friday at the Gaslite Manor, 2485 Church Road.
Kane County 16th Circuit Court Associate Judge Rene Cruz, formerly a local attorney and past president of the Aurora Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, will be the keynote speaker. Cruz became Kane County’s first Latino judge last year.
Torres is being cited for his work with St. Nicholas Church, Family Focus, Aurora Township, the city of Aurora, 2nd Ward Alderman Juany Garza and other organizations. His photographic work recently earned recognition at a Waubonsee Community College art exhibition honoring Aurora’s 175th anniversary in 2012.
