YORKVILLE — The public suicide of a Yorkville man in the Kendall County Courthouse parking lot remains a private mystery.
Officials are trying to track down why John M. Lundberg, who lived on a country road south of Yorkville, shot himself to death Friday afternoon in the courthouse parking lot, next to his car.
He parked in the far west end of the lot, across the street from the Public Safety Center.
But it appears Lundberg, 52, had no business at the courthouse, and “didn’t even go into the courthouse,” said Craig French, a Kendall County sheriff’s deputy.
French said Monday the Sheriff’s Department so far has come up empty on a motive, and on why Lundberg chose the courthouse parking lot.
“We’re still working on all that,” he said.
The Sheriff’s Department first got involved at 1:46 p.m. Friday when a call came in that there was a man with a gun in the courthouse parking lot. When deputies arrived, they found Lundberg on the ground with what appeared to be a gunshot wound.
Video surveillance cameras at the courthouse showed Lundberg in the parking lot with a shotgun by his car. He put the shotgun to his head and a single shot was discharged from the weapon, deputies said.
