Geneva schools set forum on  Coultrap building

Updated: February 14, 2013 6:27AM

GENEVA — The School Board is sponsoring a forum on Monday to provide updated information and get more public input on the future of the Coultrap facility on Peyton Street.

The district is considering several options for the Coultrap building, which has not been used as a school since the 2008-09 school year.

Three options would relocate the district’s administrative offices on Fourth Street to the Coultrap site, requiring major renovations that the district estimates could cost from $2.3 million to as much as $4.3 million.

The fourth option would be to demolish the building — at an estimated cost of $861,813 — and maintain the district’s administrative offices at the Fourth Street facility.

The Superintendent’s Facility Task Force has recommended that the building be demolished.

It costs about $69,000 a year to operate Coultrap at a minimal level, district officials said, and in the next three to five years the building will require major repairs estimated to cost $1.2 million to $1.6 million.

The forum seeking input from neighbors and the community is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday at the Coultrap facility, 1113 Peyton St. People also can send comments by e-mail to board@geneva304.org.

Board members plan to make a decision on the future of the building by the end of January.
