Will County deputy shoots man who attacked her during domestic dispute

LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP — A Will County Sheriff’s deputy shot a young man who attacked her during a domestic dispute Thursday, according to reports.
Police were called at 7:25 p.m. to a residence in the 2300 block of Gaylord Road where three other adults and two children live.
Spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said two deputies were allowed inside by family members and told Jose Chavez, 17, had been “acting erratically and threatening them with a knife.”
When the deputies encountered Chavez in a hallway, he refused to drop the knife and cut a female deputy across the face. The deputy, a two-year veteran of the department, shot him one time, Hoffmeyer said.
Chavez fled the house, but was captured in the driveway.
Other sheriff’s officers, Crest Hill police and Lockport Township firefighters responded after the report of shots fired and requested ambulances, according to radio traffic.
Chavez and the deputy were taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, where the teen had undergone surgery and was listed in critical condition Friday.
The deputy’s injuries are not considered life-threatening, but she underwent facial surgery Friday morning and is expected to recover, Hoffmeyer said.
Deputy Chief Ken Kaupas said sheriff’s police have had previous contact with Chavez when he was considered a juvenile.
“Last night’s behavior and attack may have been fueled by Chavez’s use of drugs earlier in the evening,” Kaupas said.
