A 40-year-old woman hit by a Metra commuter train at the Route 59 station in Aurora-Naperville Thursday may have purposely stepped in front of the train, police said.

The woman, who was not identified, was being treated at Edward Hospital in Naperville after the incident. She was in critical condition, Naperville police said late Thursday afternoon.

She was hit on the north side tracks by the westbound train #1231 on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe line.

“It appears so far that she intentionally stepped in front of the train,” said Naperville police spokesman Lou Cammiso.

Police Sgt. Steve Schindlbeck said the train hit the woman at 1:43 p.m., and a nurse who was on the train got off to give the victim medical assistance until paramedics arrived.

The woman suffered internal injuries, Schindlbeck said.

He said she was trapped under the first and second cars on the seven-car train.

Train passenger Tavarrie Meeks, 18, of Aurora, said the woman was trapped underneath the train car he was riding in. The train had already slowed down for arrival at the Route 59 station when it hit the woman, he said.

“They let all the doors open to let people off the train. When I got off I heard the (conductor) yelling and I saw she was underneath my car on the train,” he said. “She was in between the tracks... but had blood all over her legs.”

“She was alive but completely silent like she was in a state of shock,” Meeks said.

Meeks said that paramedics carried her away from the scene, covering her face with her jacket.

Meeks, a Columbia College student, was returning home on the train from classes in Chicago.
