Someone stole tools, copper and snacks, worth a total of $2,100, from a home in the 100 block of South Russell Avenue between 11 a.m. Tuesday and 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aurora police said.
According to police, officers were called by a neighbor for a strong odor of gas coming from a house. A Nicor employee was able to shut off the gas, which was apparently leaking from some of the half-inch pipes that had been removed.
Police said the thief pried open the back door of the house, which was being renovated. The suspect also broke a window in the home, probably so he could hand copper out of the house, police said. Besides taking the copper and tools, the homeowner said the thief also used the bathroom, ate chips and took all the soda from the house, police said.
