Batavia eyes pay hike for non-union city workers

BATAVIA — The city’s non-union employees and paid-on-call firefighters may be getting 2 percent salary and wage increases next year.
A provision for wage increases for non-collectively bargained employees — from police and fire chiefs to department directors, superintendents and office receptionists – were included in the recently adopted 2013 budget.
The City Council will consider the salary increases at its meeting on Monday.
Peggy Colby, city finance director, said in a budget summary that wage increases were recommended “to mitigate any further compression between union and non-union positions which occurred due to non-union wage cuts in prior years combined with union increases.”
Colby said 77 percent of operating costs in the general fund were related to personnel. She said the budget provided 2 percent wage increase for all employees, with estimates for the city’s six union contracts that are subject to negotiation.
The hourly duty wage rate for paid-on-call recruit firefighters will increase from $9.80 to $10 and captains from $20.33 to $20.74. A point system awarded for alarm and regular drill compensation is also proposed to increase.
