GENEVA — The first full meeting of the new Kane County Board opened by honoring outgoing members, and continued by outlining proposed changes as they move forward.

Committee assignments for standing committees were approved at Tuesday’s meeting, with more changes to come. The board discussed new Chairman Chris Lauzen’s proposal to create two new committees, create co-chairmen for two committees, and create a deputy chairman position. It will vote on the proposals next month.

Nine Republicans and six Democrats serve as committee chairmen under the new assignments. The board has 14 Republicans and 10 Democrats.

“It’s not a winner take all. It’s a proportional type of leadership,” Lauzen said.

Those assignments include a new agriculture committee and a jobs committee.

The standing committees, minus the legislative committee, will begin work immediately. The legislative committee was delayed because it included co-chairmen, a concept that the board will vote on next month.

Current legislative committee Chairman Jesse Vazquez, D-Montgomery, asked to begin work immediately because of a lame duck session in Springfield, but Lauzen said January would be slow. The committee’s work is delayed until the board decides whether to approve accepting co-chairmen. Vazquez and Maggie Auger, R-Algonquin, are to be co-chairmen of the committee.

Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, was voted vice chairman of the board and would fill in whenever Lauzen is not able to attend a meeting. Lauzen is also wants to appoint a deputy chairman, who would serve as the liaison between the committees and the chairman.

The new committees, co-chair positions and the deputy chairman will be discussed at the board’s executive committee meeting and possibly be up for a vote in January.
