Aurora man killed by truck near Sugar Grove

Updated: January 12, 2013 6:24AM

A man from Aurora died Monday night after being hit by a pickup truck while walking along an unlighted stretch of roadway in an unincorporated area of Sugar Grove Township.

Investigators from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office are continuing their probe of the traffic crash that took the life of Dean Craig, 54.

Sheriff’s police Lt. Patrick Gengler said the crash occurred about 7:40 p.m. Monday on a stretch of Jericho Road west of Dugan Road near Sugar Grove.

“The initial investigation indicates that a Toyota Tundra pickup was traveling east on Jericho Road when it struck a pedestrian” who was walking in the same direction, Gengler said late Monday night in a release. The pedestrian, identified as Craig, was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

Gengler identified the truck driver as a 25-year-old man from Plano.

The driver was traveling alone at the time and escaped injury. Gengler said the man was not arrested or ticketed in the crash, and no action was likely to be taken against him.

The portion of Jericho Road where the crash occurred “is a country road with no lighting, and a 55 mph speed limit,” Gengler said. It was closed to traffic between Ashe and Dugan roads for about three hours following the crash.

Gengler added the case remains under investigation by sheriff’s officers and members of the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team.
