BATAVIA — On Dec. 21, local artists will converge on Water Street Studios in Batavia to see just what will happen on the end date of the Maya calendar.
To prepare, they’ll surround themselves in apocalyptic art and don post-apocalyptic attire for Apocalypse: An Exploration of the End of Days.
“It’s an art show, but it’s also an apocalypse party,” said artist and organizer Chris Hodge of North Aurora.
Hodge is an art teacher at Naperville Central High School, and a resident artist at Water Street Studios, 160 S. Water St. in Batavia.
“We’re going to wear costumes and really get into the spirit of the occasion,” he said.
Apocalypse: An Exploration of the End of Days presents the work of local artists Mike Mancuso, Steven Lockwood, Lisa Ann Green, Brian Busch, Rebecca Mancuso, Kim Fredericks, Patty Davoust, and others.
The artists will display their artistic interpretations of the end of the world.
Hodge will also show his detailed and lurid works. His distinct style that typically gives incredible detail to larger than life creatures and other nonsensical delights is perfect for an art show that takes place on what could be humanity’s last day, he said.
“It could just be another false alarm,” Hodge said.
But just in case the Mayan texts were right, he invites the community to join him in the end-of-days celebration.
“After all, there’s the potential that no one will have to be anywhere the next day,” he added.
The public is invited, and guests are encouraged to dress in their finest post-apocalyptic attire.
The Apocalypse art show opening is from 7 to 10 p.m. on Dec. 21 at Water Street Studios, 160 S. Water St. in Batavia, just east of Route 31. The show runs from Dec. 17 through 23.
