YORKVILLE — It took the new Kendall County Board about five minutes to elect John Shaw as its new chairman.

Shaw, 74, was just re-elected in November to his second term on the board. The Yorkville area Republican has served as the Lisbon Township Clerk, and on the Lisbon-Seward Fire Protection District board.

Shortly after all 10 board members were sworn in during a short ceremony at the Historic Kendall County Courthouse, eight of them voted for Shaw as the new board leader. Voting against Shaw were incumbent board Chairman John Purcell, and board member Jeff Wehrli, who had nominated Purcell for another stint as chairman.

Voting for Shaw were board veterans Elizabeth Flowers, Dan Koukol and Shaw himself, and the five newcomers to the board, Scott Gryder, Amy Cesich, Lynn Cullick, Judy Gilmour and Matt Prochaska.

The election for chairman was in stark contrast to two years ago, when it took about four hours, numerous ballots and several private meetings between board members to elect a chairman.

The board also held a drawing to determine which members would get two-year terms and which would get four-year terms. There were two two-year terms in the 2nd District and three two-year terms in the 1st District.

Selection was done by County Clerk Debbie Gillette, who dropped ping pong balls with the names of board members into a clear container, and randomly selecting them.

In the 1st District, Purcell and Shaw each drew four-year terms, and Cesich, Gilmour and Prochaska drew two-year terms.

In the 2nd District, Wehrli, Koukol and Flowers drew four-year terms, and Cullick and Gryder drew two-year terms.

Other officers elected included: Gilmour as board vice chairman; Wehrli as president of the Forest Preserve District, a position he already held; Cullick as Forest Preserve District vice president; and Flowers as Forest Preserve secretary.
