The mastiff dog that attacked and killed a Big Rock firefighter has been euthanized, the Kane County Sheriff’s office confirmed this week.
Dawn Brown, a 44-year-old Bristol-Kendall firefighter and Big Rock paramedic, died of injuries she sustained during a dog attack in her Big Rock home earlier this month.
Kane County Sheriff’s Lt. Pat Gengler said the 130- to 140-pound mastiff was put down last week by Kane County Animal Control. The two other family dogs, a boxer and pit bull mixed breed, were returned to the owner, Brown’s husband. Neighbors described those two dogs as “like children” to the Browns.
“(The mastiff) was put down at the owner’s request,” Gengler said. “It wasn’t through a court order or anything else.”
Brown and her husband, Bob, had recently taken the six-year-old male mastiff into their home from a relative to prevent it from being put down.
Officials said earlier that it is clear that only the mastiff attacked Brown. The other two dogs were not injured in the attack, Gengler said.
