Aurora attorney Rene Cruz has been selected as Kane County’s newest judge.
Cruz was selected over 35 other candidates. Cruz has been an attorney in the Aurora area for 17 years.
According to a press release from the 16th Judicial Circuit Court, Cruz started his career with the offices of Morelli, Cook & Peterson in Aurora. He later served as an associate in the law firm of Barbosa & Gil. He moved to Eduardo Gil & Associates in late 1996 and became a partner in the firm of law offices of Gil & Cruz in 2000, where he has continued his practice.
Cruz is a graduate of the Balboa High School in the Panama Canal Zone and received his bachelor’s degree from The Citadel Military College in South Carolina. He received his law degree from Northern Illinois University School of Law in 1997.
Cruz past president and legal counsel for the Aurora Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Aurora Hispanic Heritage Board-Business Roundtable. He also has served on the Rasmussen College Advisory Board.
Cruz’s selection comes on the heels of Judith Brawka being named chief judge earlier this month. Longtime Judges Allen Anderson, Robert Janes and Tim Sheldon all recently announced their retirements. Janes has presided over many different courtrooms and currently serves in the family court. Cruz will take Janes’ associate judge seat. The circuit judges elect associate judges.
