PLAINFIELD — Larry’s Diner will host its 19th annual free Thanksgiving dinner for senior citizens on Thursday.
Last year, Larry’s attracted 746 customers with the event, and the diner is looking to surpass that number this year.
Larry’s Diner, at Route 30 and Route 126, will host the holiday meal from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday. The meal is free for seniors 62 and older.
Seniors get a choice of three meals: roast turkey with dressing and all the trimmings, roast chicken with dressing and all the trimmings, and baked ham with sweet potatoes and fruit sauce.
Dessert is included, including pumpkin pie, homemade apple pie, ice cream, Jello and homemade rice pudding. Cocktails are available, but at a charge.
The idea came from owner Kostas Alexopoulos and former co-owner Larry Saravanos’ early experiences in America. Alexopoulos moved to the country in 1978, Saravanos in 1969. Saravanos bused tables in Chicago when he first moved to the country. The restaurant where he worked closed on Thanksgiving, and Saravanos was alone. He decided that if he ever owned his own restaurant, he would make sure people had a seat at his tables at Thanksgiving.
