North Auroran accused of sexual abuse, assault

ST. CHARLES — Convicted and sent to prison six years ago for killing a West Chicago man in a 2003 drunken crash, Daniel Hummell now finds himself facing serious charges again.

Hummell, 51, of North Aurora, has been charged with criminal sex assault of a family member and two counts of aggravated sexual abuse involving the same female relative under the age of 18, according to court records.

Hummell, who is accused of assaulting and fondling the girl in August, is being held in Kane County Jail on $500,000 bail. He made his first court appearance Thursday, and is scheduled to return next week for a status hearing. If he is released from jail, Hummell is prohibited from any contact with the victim or residences in North Aurora and downstate Jacksonville, west of Springfield.

Hummell, who had two previous DUI arrests, was driving drunk on Keslinger Road near Bunker Road in June 2003 after leaving Swedish Days in Geneva. His car slammed into a motorcycle driven by 41-year-old Julio Herrera of West Chicago. Herrera died of his injuries, leaving behind a wife and two children.

Hummell pleaded guilty to reckless homicide and was sentenced to five years in prison in February 2006. He was paroled by the Illinois Department of Corrections in April 2010 and released from parole about six months ago, an IDOC official said Thursday. A judge also ruled in favor of Herrera’s widow in a wrongful death lawsuit against Hummell.

The Kane County Child Advocacy Center investigated the allegations which led to the new charges against Hummell.
