An Aurora Army veteran has been nominated for an award that recognizes hometown heroes.

Raul Buendia is one of three people competing in the Our Town, Our Heroes contest, sponsored by Chevrolet.

Buendia served in Operation Enduring Freedom as a senior scout with the Army National Guard.

At Aurora University, Buendia majored in finance as well as business and commerce. He is a credit counselor at Aurora Consumer Credit Counseling Service..

Buendia was nominated by his friend and former classmate, Robert Lopez.

“Raul has been the driving force behind all of our successes with words of kindness, motivation, understanding, determination and brotherly love,” Lopez wrote in the nomination form. “... I truly believe there is no other hero like Raul.”

Buendia is nominated with a DeKalb man who has helped veterans get to medical appointments and an Urbana woman who makes care packages for soldiers. The person receiving the most online votes will get a one-week loan of a Chevrolet vehicle and $500 gift card.
