YORKVILLE — The Illinois Department of Transportation this past week announced the beginning of the Route 47 widening project through town.
It was an unusual announcement because many people thought the project began already.
For months now, there have been closed lanes from time to time and the familiar orange construction signs.
But those were put up by the utility companies that were relocating their infrastructure in advance of the IDOT project.
With the relocation finished, IDOT announced that the $29.4 million contract awarded to D Construction Inc., of Coal City, could begin.
There was no work actually being done Thursday, but Yorkville city officials Friday said they received more details about the beginnings of the project from D Construction. Inc.
Most of the work is going to begin south of the river, beginning with temporary signals being installed throughout October into the first part of November. There are already temporary traffic poles on the ground at 47 and 126.
The Muellner building, on the southwest corner of Van Emmon Street and Route 47, should torn down by the end of October.
Sanitary sewer and water crossings are going to start at Elizabeth Street in the next few days, and then crews will be moving north from that point.
Grading for temporary pavement will start in the next few days. The temporary pavement will be used for road jogs during major construction of the existing roadway.
IDOT and D Construction will make a decision later this year on whether the roadway will begun to be torn up prior to winter or during spring.
The road eventually is to be widened between Kennedy Road on the north end and Route 71, on the south end.
The project has been divided into three parts, the first of which is the section between Route 47, including work on that intersection, and Route 126.
