A 70-year-old Aurora man has been identified as Kane County’s third victim of West Nile virus this season.
The county Health Department said the man was hospitalized, but has been discharged and is recovering. The county’s two other victims are a 16-year-old Batavia girl who recovered from the illness, and a 64-year-old Elgin man who died last month.
West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito. Few people who are bitten by an infected mosquito actually experience any illness, health officials said. But in the worst case, serious illness, such as encephalitis and meningitis, and death are possible.
