AURORA — A 44-year-old Aurora man has been charged with beating his wife with a hammer while she slept early Wednesday morning.

Camilo Rivera, of the 400 block of Clark Street, is charged with attempted murder and aggravated domestic battery, police said.

Police and paramedics went to Rivera’s home at 2:07 a.m. Wednesday in response to a 911 call. Officers found Rivera’s 39-year-old wife in bed with massive head injuries, police said. Investigators determined that Rivera attacked his wife with a hammer while she was sleeping. She may have been hit more than once, police said.

Four the couples’ children, all between 15- and 21-years-old, were home at the time of the attack, police said. Three of the children were awakened by their mother’s screams and came to help her, police said. They were able to stop the attack and Rivera went into another room of the house until officers arrived, police said.

Rivera was still at his house when police arrived and he was arrested without incident. Police recovered the hammer they believe was used in the attack.

Police did not identify Rivera’s wife. She was taken to Provena Mercy Medical Center, then flown to a suburban Chicago hospital for treatment. Police said she is critical condition and her injuries may be life-threatening.

Aurora police spokesman Dan Ferrelli would not comment on what prompted the attack, other than to say it was “domestic related.”

Rivera is expected to appear in bond court Thursday morning. The family declined to comment Wednesday afternoon.
