ST. CHARLES — Route 64 between Kautz Road and Route 59 was closed this afternoon after two gas mains were struck by work crews, officials said.
The closure took place at noon after the mains were struck — one at Powis Road and Route 64 in West
Chicago and the other at 4051 E. Main St. (Route 64) in St. Charles.
Public safety personnel were on the scene awaiting NICOR crews to mitigate the situation, according to a press release from the St. Charles Fire Department.
There were no immediate reports of injury or fire from the leaking mains.
St. Charles Police spokesman Paul McCurtain said that traffic is being handled by the West Chicago Police Department.
The detour for the incident on the St. Charles side is either northbound on Smith Road or southbound on Kautz Road, McCurtain said.
The fire department said the gas main leak at 4501 E. Main St. was sealed by 1:30 p.m. but Route 64 remained closed between Kautz and 59 due to the larger break at Powis. Traffic to local businesses in the closed area was being allowed. It was anticipated that work would continue into the afternoon.
The road has been undergoing a major widening and improvement project this summer.
