Kane eyes accounting firm to step in for finance chief

Updated: September 4, 2012 6:15AM

GENEVA — Kane County may hire an accounting firm to serve as its finance director.

The county board’s Finance Committee on Wednesday approved hiring the accounting firm of Wermer, Rogers, Doran and Ruzon LLC of Joliet to serve as interim finance director.

The firm is to provide technical expertise from August until December.

The hiring is a short-term maneuver to deal with the absence of Finance Director Cheryl Patelli, who recently resigned.

The county will need the assistance quickly, as the task of preparing the 2013 budget looms around the corner.

The firm will help the county with items such as levies and revenue projections, but the task of actually preparing the budget will take place in-house, Finance Committee Chairman Jim Mitchell said.

Many of the budget tasks will fall to two accountants in the county Finance Department.

The committee also voted to give them temporary raises, as they begin the process of working on the budget.

The committee is also recommending that a search begin for a permanent replacement for Patelli — even though the county board chairman’s term comes to an end in November and several board seats potentially could change as a result of the November election.

“It takes several months to even get the candidates to consider,” committee member John Hoscheit said.

“My contention is that we should begin that process,” Hoscheit said.
