The Geneva streets superintendent who is charged with making $24,000 of personal purchases on city credit cards turned himself in this weekend.
Last week, a grand jury indicted Steve LeMaire, 55, on felony charges of theft, online theft by deception and official misconduct. LeMaire, of the 400 block of Banbury Avenue, Elburn, turned himself in Saturday, posted $2,500 bond and was released, Geneva police said. He is scheduled to be in court March 7.
On Jan. 10, police received a report from the Geneva Public Works Department about suspicious activity on the city credit card account in LeMaire’s name, police said. LeMaire had use of the credit card for city business, but using the card for personal purchases is prohibited by city code, police said.
The city audited the credit card and found suspicious purchases dating back to 2006. According to police, most of the purchases were to online retailers for outdoor clothing and equipment. LeMaire had the items shipped to himself at the city’s public works facility. In total, the investigation found that LeMaire had made $24,000 worth of inappropriate charges on the city credit card.
Police said LeMaire was cooperative throughout the investigation. If convicted, LeMaire faces between four and 15 years in prison, and up to $75,000 in fines.
