AURORA — Provena Mercy Medical Center is offering free pregnancy tests to lessen the financial stress for local residents who suspect they may be pregnant and cannot afford to seek medical attention for a definitive answer.
If you think you could be pregnant and are in need of a free pregnancy test or other assistance, call 630-801-2505 to schedule a no-cost pregnancy test. If the test is positive, Provena Mercy can immediately arrange for Medicaid insurance coverage and provide a referral to an obstetrician.

Dreyer welcomes social worker
GENEVA — Ann Schulz, LCSW, has joined the Department of Psychiatry at Dreyer Medical Clinic, and is seeing patients of all ages at the clinic’s West Downer location. Ann received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Arizona in Tucson, in 1991. She received her master’s of social work and completed her internship with Loyola University in Chicago, in 1999. Her special interests include children age 7 and older, adolescents, adults, family therapy, life transition issues, grief, loss and women’s issues.

‘Power of Forgiveness’ workshop
GENEVA — From 6 to 7:30 p.m. July 14 at the LivingWell Cancer Resource Center, Leslie Karen Sann will lead a workshop about the power of forgiveness and how to use it to achieve the greatest well-being.
Sann has been a board certified professional counselor, educator,and coach for more than 25 years, who uses her gifts to awaken possibility, authenticity and joy, according to a news release. She has a master’s degree in counseling psychology from the University of Santa Monica, with an emphasis in spiritual psychology. She also has a master’s of theology in practical spirituality and she received her bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University. Physical appointments available
AURORA — VNA Health Centers are accepting appointments for school and sports physicals for the fall 2011 school year. Cost for the physicals is $25 and includes all immunizations.
VNA Health Center at 400 N. Highland Ave. in Aurora is offering special appointment times for school and sports physicals from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays, July 7, 14, 21, and 28. Appointments are available on other days as well. Students entering Cowherd, Simmons, Waldo or East High are encouraged to make an appointment at VNA’s Tomcat Health Center, within East Aurora High School. VNA Health Center at 620 Wing St. in Elgin is also accepting appointments for school and sport physicals.
School physicals are required for all students entering kindergarten, sixth and ninth grades. Any student participating in a school-sponsored sport must have a sports physical. Parents are required to be present and should bring a copy of the child’s immunization record. Medicaid patients should bring a copy of their card and must have selected VNA Health Center as their primary care provider.

Nurse of Year nominees sought
FOX VALLEY — The Leukemia Research Foundation is seeking nominations of nurses who treat patients of leukemia, lymphoma and myelodysplastic syndromes for its annual Nurse of the Year Award. Patients who have been treated for these blood cancers, as well as spouses, parents of patients, caregivers, children of patients, coworkers and medical professionals, are all invited to nominate a nurse — or several nurses — for the award.
Nominations are open until Aug. 17, and application forms are available at local hospitals or the Leukemia Research Foundation website at www.leukemia-research.org. Forms are also available by email at Linda@LRFmail.org or by calling 847-424-0600.
Nomination guidelines include:
Candidates must work in Illinois or within 100 miles of Chicago.
Candidates must hold an RN or an LPN certification and care for or serve patients with leukemia, lymphoma or myelodysplastic syndromes;
Nominations must be submitted on the official LRF nomination form.

How To Check Your
Blood Sugar class
GENEVA — This program is designed for individuals with diabetes or prediabetes. A diabetes educator will explain how and when to check your blood sugars. Blood glucose meter representatives will also discuss the advantages of particular meters and provide sample meters. Registration required.
The event is free, and will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. July 26 in Delnor Hospital’s Health and Wellness Center.
