If you have teenage children, “Dear Counselor” just might be the book you want on hand.

Author and licensed clinical professional counselor and therapist Kimberly Groll uses her almost two years of advice columns for The Naperville Sun as the basis of her book. The columns address a wide range of issues teenagers and their parents might be confronted with.

Groll touches on issues such as substance abuse, college binge drinking, productive parenting, self-esteem, mental illness, body rocking, child sexual abuse, anger, suicide and more with what she defines as an “inspiring guide.”

“If I could bring awareness to addressing issues early on with preventing one death, whether it be related to drugs, school shootings, or suicide, then I feel the purpose of writing this book has been received,” Groll says.

The book focuses on helping parents and adolescents define behavioral markers that might need further care, possibly professional.

“This book is to help parents be aware and to address the issues early on,” says Groll, who too often sees devastated parents, adolescents and families seek help after there has been substantial trouble.

“If you are addressing issues early on, you may still be able to teach them (troubled teens) coping skills they can incorporate into their daily lives,” Groll adds. “Not every behavioral issue needs to be treated with medication.”

The book is available for purchase at achievingsolutionscounseling.com for $14.95 or at Anderson’s Bookshop in downtown Naperville.

Groll treats adolescents and adults at her practice, Achieving Solutions Counseling, 608 S. Washington St., suite 207. Contact her at 630-632-4060.
