When Erin Erikson isn’t sewing or making patterns, she’s sharing them. The Geneva native has been sewing for most of her life and has spent the past four years recording her experiences on her blog, Dog Under My Desk.
Erikson, 32, grew up around sewing, namely her mother and aunt who taught her the basics. However, Erikson thinks her skills blossom best with insight from other bloggers.
“There is a great blog community for sewing, along with the many of us on social media like Twitter and Instagram,” she says. “If you have a question or need advice, any time of day or night, someone is always there.
“I have some amazing friends who started as customers or Twitter followers. We all have sewing in common, but our conversation quickly turns to our dogs, our need for an endless supply of caffeine, our desire to travel … sewing is just something that starts the conversation.”
Erikson contributes to this community by offering free patterns, tutorials and pictures of her creations. Her projects and tutorials range in difficulty, to match the various skill levels of her readers.
“I’m a creative person, but I can’t draw or paint, and this gives me a creative outlet,” Erikson said. “Sewing involves a lot of math, which I love. The spatial problem-solving aspect of it is fun for me. I really enjoy the technical writing part of sewing patterns.”
Readers of Dog Under My Desk will find sewing tips and tutorials, as well as insight into Erikson’s inspiration and life.
