Parks & Recreation: From skiing to beekeeping

Festival funding application deadline: The city of Aurora is accepting applications to provide neighborhood festival and special event funding to local groups to support celebrations promoting culture or fostering community spirit. Neighborhood Festival Funding applications and guidelines are available at the city’s community services department, 5 E. Downer Place, Suite A; by calling 630-256-3400; or visiting the city’s website at, clicking the “special events” tab and selecting “permits and applications.” Completed applications must be submitted to the community services department by 5 p.m. Jan. 30.


Youth soccer spring registration: The Kaneland Youth Soccer Organization is taking registrations for spring recreational soccer for 4- to 17-year-olds through Jan. 30 at The season is six games from April 13 until May 18. Games and practices are at the KYSO fields in Maple Park. Registration fees are $85 for the first child, $65 for each additional child. For details, email

Fox Valley Beekeepers’ Association: This new beekeeper group is for people who are interested in becoming a beekeeper or already are. Meet with seasoned beekeepers who are willing to share their knowledge, experience and expertise to help you become a better beekeeper. Meet at 7 p.m. Jan. 29 at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Skiing at Alpine Valley: Pack in a full day of skiing or snowboarding at Alpine Valley Ski Resort. This trip includes transportation, equipment rental and lift-ticket. The bus leaves from and returns to South Point. Trips are from 7:15 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Jan. 21 and Feb. 18. Learn more at

Park District Finance Department receives award: For the second consecutive year, the Oswegoland Park District’s Finance Department has been awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting.
