Politics and Arts: St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church, 2950 Bilter Road, Aurora, has special events for Black History Month and its 150th anniversary. Karen Freeman Wilson, the first African American female mayor of Gary, Ind., will speak at Sunday’s 10 a.m. worship service. At 5 p.m. Feb. 26, the church will have a gospel concert and presentations of dance, drama and visual arts. Soloists will include opera and gospel coloratura soprano Felicia Coleman-Evans, and gospel singers Doris Sykes and Neicy Robertson. Free and open to the public.

“Not-For-Kids-Only” Children’s Concert: Our Savior Lutheran Church, 420 W. Downer Place, Aurora, hosts the Fox Valley Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Maryann Flock, with a special children’s concert at 3 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free, but donations are accepted. Second annual Chicken Soup at the Temple: The Sisterhood of Temple B’nai Israel will host a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Temple, 400 N. Edgelawn Drive, Aurora. National Religious Broadcasters Award: Aurora native Ron Mighell will receive the notable National Religious Broadcasters Milestone Award at the Feb. 21 Awards Dinner at the NRB 2012 Convention and Exposition. Mighell has written, directed and acted in many radio dramas, several of which received the Peabody Award and other awards of merit for unique content. Mighell is retired and now lives in Toccoa, Ga.

The Heifer Project: The Sunday School children at United Methodist Church in Plano are collecting donations for a “Cheeses of the World Gift Basket” which is a gift of a heifer, goat, sheep, and water buffalo to third world families.
