Fox Valley service members earn distinction

Members of the armed forces from the Fox Valley area have reached the following milestones in their military careers:

Air Force basic training

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Servicemen graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Travis Pinson. Pinson earned distinction as an honor graduate. He is the son of Mary and Billy Pinson of Geneva. The airman is a 2005 graduate of Geneva High School.

Air Force Airman Nathan Pahlow. Pahlow earned distinction as an honor graduate. He is the grandson of Dick Atkinson of DeKalb and son of Ben Pahlow of Batavia. The airman is a 2011 graduate of Batavia High School.

Air National Guard Airman Christian Downen. Downen is the son of Allen Downen of Yorkville. He is a 2011 graduate of Yorkville High School.

Air Force Airman Maxwell Dempsey. Dempsey is the son of Celeste and Paul Dempsey of Naperville. He is a 2011 graduate of Waubonsie Valley High School.

Air Force Airman Jarret Berggren. Berggren is the son of Lee Berggren of Serena and grandson of Sharon Pulliam of Sheridan. He is a 2009 graduate of Serena High School.

Air Force Airman Tyler Lurz. Lurz earned distinction as an honor graduate. Lurz is the son of Tracy Lurz of Sandwich and Todd Lurz of Leland. He is a 2008 graduate of Sandwich High School.

Air Force Airman Sana Salman. She is a 2005 graduate of Waubonsie Valley High School.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Keely Muzzey. Muzzey is the daughter of Candy Muzzey of Elgin and Dave Muzzey of St. Charles. She is a 2006 graduate of Burlington Central High School. She earned an associate degree in 2009 from Elgin Community College.

Air Force Airman Clinton Burnett. Burnett is the son of Roseann Burnett of Yorkville. He is a 2011 graduate of Yorkville High School.

Navy basic training

Servicemen recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes.

▪ Navy Seaman Recruit Ricardo Garcia. He is the nephew of Glenda and Timothy Kasza of West Chicago. Garcia is a 2011 graduate of South Elgin High School.

▪ Navy Seaman Recruit Tahara Williams. She is the daughter of Donna and Harvey Williams of Sugar Grove. Williams is a 2006 graduate of Mount Notre Dame High School of Cincinnati and a 2010 graduate of Utah State University, Utah, with a bachelor of science degree.

Basic infantry training

Army Reserve Pvt. Austin Hurd has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Ga. Hurd is the son of Rebecca and Elwood Hurd of Montgomery. He is a 2011 graduate of Oswego East High School.

Basic combat training

Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

Army Reserve Pfc. Eric Covelli, son of Beth and Gregory Covelli of St. Charles. He is a 2003 graduate of St. Charles North High School.

Special exercise

Navy Seaman Christopher Daugherty and fellow sailors and embarked Marines recently participated in a community service project at the House of Family children’s shelter in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. The shelter is funded by the School of Public Health and Social Work of St. Elizabeth and serves as a refuge for HIV/AIDS positive orphans or vulnerable children. Daugherty is the son of Anna and Ron Daugherty of Oswego. He is a 2008 graduate of Oswego High School and joined the Navy in September 2008.

Awards

Army Staff Sgt. Jennifer Alexander has been inducted into the Sgt. Audie L. Murphy Club, formed in 1986 in honor of the Army’s World War II most decorated combat soldier, Audie Leon Murphy. Inductees receive the Audie L. Murphy medallion for demonstrating the skills and knowledge characterized by Sgt. Murphy. Alexander has served nine years in the military. She is the daughter of Anna Tracz of Sycamore and Marty Tracz of Hampshire. Her husband is Taliaferro Alexander. The staff sergeant is a 2002 graduate of Geneva High School and earned an associate degree in 2011 from Central Texas College, Killeen, Texas.

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Matthew Pautlitz recently was selected Junior Sailor of the Year, while serving as a member of Commander, Fleet Logistics Support Wing, Fort Worth, Texas. Pautlitz was selected as (VR-46) Eagles Sailor of the Year for his work ethic, willingness to go above and beyond the requirements of his respective billet assignment both on the job and in the community. He is the son of Linnea Cuneo of Naperville and James Pautlitz of Naperville. Pautlitz is a 1996 graduate of Naperville North High School and joined the Navy in October 1996.

Promotion

Navy Seaman Apprentice Garrett Calebaugh recently was promoted to his current rank upon graduation from recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes. He demonstrated outstanding performance during all phases of the training cycle. Calebaugh is the son of Debra and John Calebaugh of Montgomery. He is a 2010 graduate of Oswego East High School.

Deployment

Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Antonio Martinez recently began a deployment to patrol the Asia-Pacific region. Martinez is an administrative chief. He has served in the military for 15 years. The gunnery sergeant graduated in 1996 from East Aurora High School and received an associate degree in 2004 from the University of Phoenix.
