Aurora cab drivers robbed at knifepoint

Updated: March 26, 2014 6:24AM

Two robberies. Ten days. One strikingly similar plan.

Aurora police are seeking help identifying the suspect or suspects who robbed two taxicab drivers at knifepoint over the last 10 days.

Police said both robberies began at the Aurora Transportation Center around the same time, and involved each driver being held at knifepoint after being directed to a location on Downer Place in Aurora.

In each instance, the taxicab drivers exited their vehicles, and the suspect fled the scene in the taxi.

The first robbery occurred on Feb. 14 at around 6:45 p.m., after a 54-year-old male taxicab driver picked up a man at the Transportation Center. The driver described the man as white, around 28 years old, approximately 5 feet, 8 inches to 6 feet tall, 160 pounds with short brown hair, police said. He was wearing a black skull cap and dark clothing. He asked to be dropped of in the 200 block of West Downer Place.

When the driver arrived at the Downer Place address, the suspect held a knife to the driver’s throat and demanded money.

Police said the driver and the suspect struggled briefly, before the driver exited the vehicle. The suspect then entered the driver’s seat and drove away westbound. Officers located the taxicab within minutes of the robbery near Downer Place and South River Street, police said.

The driver was taken to an area hospital where he was treated for minor facial injuries. His cell phone and wallet were taken during the robbery, police said.

Police said a possibly related incident occurred on Sunday around 6 p.m. when a 51-year-old male taxicab driver picked up a man at the Aurora Transportation Center in Aurora and was directed to a drop-off location on the city’s West Side.

When they arrived at the agreed upon location, police said the suspect changed his mind and directed the driver to drop him off in the 400 block of West Downer Place. When the taxicab driver reached the Downer Place address, the suspect held a knife to his throat and demanded money, police said. The driver was able to grab the suspect’s hand and move the knife from his throat. The drive then jumped out of the taxi and ran away.

Police said the suspect got into the driver’s seat and drove away westbound. The taxicab was located by responding officers in the 0-99 block of South River Street within minutes of the robbery.

The suspect in this incident was described by the driver as being white or Hispanic, around 6 feet, 2 inches tall, 280 pounds, with green or light brown eyes, scruffy facial hair and having a large build. He was wearing a gray winter cap and gray jacket.

Police said the driver refused medical attention. Money, a cell phone and a laptop computer were taken during the second incident, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Aurora police at 630-256-5500 or Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at 630-892-1000.
