AURORA — The Housing Authority has opened its waiting list for those seeking one- and two-bedroom units.
To be considered for the waiting list, applicants must download two application forms, complete the forms and drop off the completed forms at AHA headquarters, 1630 W. Plum St., Aurora. Applications are available in English and Spanish at wwww.auroraha.org.
AHA Executive Director Keith Gregory said the agency wants to build its waiting list back up after a wait list purge was conducted in August 2013. That purge, the first in more than a decade, left the one- and two-bedroom wait lists with few families who still needed units, he said.
The agency also expects 30 studio and one-bedroom units at Maple Terrace to open to new tenants after a fire in May 2013 necessitated the units be vacated. The previous tenants in those units have since been rehoused.
“We are looking to fill [units] in a very short timeline,” Gregory said Wednesday.
The Maple Terrace units could open as early as spring, he said.
In October 2013, the Housing Authority opened the waiting list for applicants seeking three-bedroom and five-bedroom units. More than 400 families have applied for three-bedroom units to date, Gregory said. That list is now closed, but officials have plans to reopen the three-bedroom list at a later date.
Forms will be available on the AHA website and at AHA offices until further notice.
The order in which applications are received has no bearing on the wait list position, according to Gregory. Families are placed on the waiting list by a random computer-generated lottery.
