AURORA — The East Aurora School Board will return to its former committee structure in February, which means full school board meetings will likely be shorter and some committee meetings will be more detailed.

“The agenda does not lend itself right now to the level of detail we need,” School Board President Annette Johnson said Tuesday afternoon. “The other structure was not necessarily working in terms of getting as many updates.”

In July, school board members decided to eliminate separate meetings for the curriculum comittee and personnel and finance committee. Instead, those matters went only before the whole board.

The buildings and grounds and student enrichment committees continued to meet separately then brought matters that required a board vote before the whole board.

At the time, board members said they wanted to try out the new structure to give all board members and members of the public more information before curriculum and finance decisions were made.

Members of the public rarely attend individual committee meetings, one board member said, and the new structure would present detailed information at the more highly attended full board meeting.

Johnson said that the board had decided the new format was not working because the detailed presentations were filling up full board agendas and delaying curriculum presentations.

“When you go to a committee structure you can do more presentations,” she said. “We have been pushing back our magnet school presentation, for example, because the agenda is so full.”

She said the change is especially important as the district expects multiple curriculum presentations on the upcoming changes to the kindergarten and alternative education programs.

Johnson will chair the personnel and finance committee, as she did before the structure change, and Stella Gonzalez will chair the curriculum committee, also as she did before the change.

The personnel and finance committee will meet the second Tuesday of the month and the curriculum committee will meet the first Monday.
