West Aurora School Board approves final 2013 levy

Updated: January 6, 2014 11:42AM

AURORA — The West Aurora School Board voted unanimously Monday night to pass a final levy totaling $86.7 million for 2013.

That figure includes $73.0 million that will go toward operating costs, such as educational instruction, transportation and staff salaries and benefits, and $13.7 million that will be used to pay down bonds and interest.

That’s up about 4.5 percent from the $83.0 million the district extended in 2012. Of that figure, about $69.5 million went toward operating costs and $13.4 million went toward bond and interest debt.

The school board passed a 2013 tentative levy for the same amount on Nov. 4. The final levy must be filed with the county clerk by the end of December.

The school district expects it will receive approval to collect $71 million of the $73 million it is requesting to cover 2013 operating costs.

District officials have said the levy increase would result in a $44 increase in property taxes for a homeowner in the district with a $150,000 home and an equalized assessed value that remained stable over the last year.
