AURORA — Elgin Police Chief Jeff Swoboda was crowned Top Cop and takes home bragging rights after a charity boxing match against Aurora Police Chief Greg Thomas Sunday night.

In the main event, “J. Swole” Swoboda took the match in three 11/2-minute rounds at the second annual Tuition Knock Out charity boxing event at La Sierra De Aurora. In the third round, Swoboda knocked “No Doubt” Thomas to his knees. Thomas recovered, before another knockdown in the round.

The Top Cop exhibition “celebrity” fighters may have been scrapping for a good cause, but they certainly weren’t just ceremoniously tapping gloves Sunday night.

Judging by the grimaces on their faces mid-fight, they were out for blows.

“They were much more competitive than I expected, highly aggressive,” said Gustavo Pique, one of four ringside boxing judges. “But their camaraderie was evident.”

The fights raised money for the National Latino Peace Officers Association Aurora Chapter Scholarship Fund.

Other Top Cop bouts

Kendall County Sheriff candidate Dwight “Ready to Fight” Baird, Oswego’s police chief, took his match against Kane County Sheriff Pat “El Jefe” Perez.

Referee Jesse “The Law” Torres, retired Aurora police officer and former pro boxer, called the match. Pique confirmed: Baird over a bloody-mouthed Perez by knockout in the second round.

Torres is founder of the Jesse “The Law” Torres Boxing Club in Aurora.

After being escorted to the ring by bagpipes, Elgin Police Cmdr. Ana “the angry Armenian” Lalley won her match over Aurora Police Cmdr. “Screamin’” Kristen Ziman.

Ziman, who donned a faux “APD” tattoo for the occasion, said the fate of her first fight sealed her retirement from the sport.

Aurora Police Officer Enrique “Get Some” Gutierrez, a last minute sub-in, took his bout against Aurora Alderman At-large Richard “Sugar Rich” Irvin, a defense attorney.

Announcer Ben Grabowski, an Aurora police detective, gave Irvin kudos for agreeing to fight a “much larger opponent” than originally scheduled. Gutierrez replaced Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Alex Bederka on the card.

Aurora Aldermen Edward Bugg, 9th Ward, and Lynn Johnson, 10th Ward, cheered their Council mate on ringside.

“I’d vote for Richard. Best chest on the City Council,” said Johnson. Irvin went shirtless after the match.

Pete Rodriguez, Aurora police officer, was victorious in a bout against Stephan Scott, a Kane County security officer, by TKO, judges decided.

In addition to Pique, Jose Antonio “El Gallo” Rivera and Luis “KO” Mateo, both former pro boxers, and Second District Appellate Judge Joseph Birkett served as match judges.

Aurora Police Sgt. Alfredo Dean, an event organizer, said that more than 1,000 people attended Sunday in support of the 17 amateur bouts and exhibition boxing matches. Dean said Monday this year’s event raised more than $20,000.

In honor of the Oswego and Elgin Top Cop champs, the NLPOA Aurora Chapter will give three scholarships to residents from Oswego or Elgin, according to Dean.

Amateur bouts

About a dozen boxers fighting out of the Jesse “The Law” Torres Boxing Club squared off in amateur bouts Sunday.

Javier Mejia Cruz, Torres Boxing Club, won his bout over opponent Trevin Miller, Luyando Boxing Club.

Javier Rivera, Rumi Maki Boxing Club, won over Saul Cano, Torres Boxing Club.

Ivan Tecuatl, Torres Boxing Club, beat opponent Jose Diaz, Rivas Boxing Club.

Kris Herrera, Torres Boxing Club, won his bout over opponent Robert Rosales, UCC Boxing Club.

Joe Zhu, Luyando Boxing Club, won his bout over Nathal Rodriguez, Torres Boxing Club.

Rolando Cano, Torres Boxing Club, beat Kevin Martinez, Jaw Breakers Boxing Club.

Isaiah Degenhart, Garfield Park Boxing Club, won his bout over Terrell Jones, Torres Boxing Club.
