AURORA — For the first time in more than six years, the Aurora Housing Authority plans to open its public housing wait list.
Starting Tuesday, the Housing Authority will be accepting applications for three-bedroom and five-bedroom units, according to Keith Gregory, AHA executive director. All applications must be turned in to the AHA no later than 4:30 p.m. Nov. 15.
Applications will first be available exclusively online at www.auroraha.org until Oct. 28. Paper applications will then be made available at Housing Authority offices at 1630 Plum St. on Oct. 28.
Gregory said families will be placed on the waiting list by a random computer-generated lottery. The order applications are received have no bearing on the wait list position, he said.
The opening of the wait list follows a wait list purge that was conducted in August. Through the purge, the AHA’s wait list was narrowed from more than 500 families to about 150 families, according to Gregory.
About five to 10 AHA public housing units become available each month.
“We need to have families who are ready to move in when those units do become available,” Gregory said.
