AURORA — After years of leaking, the century-old downtown building that houses the SciTech Museum is slated to get a new roof.
Mark Anderson, the city’s superintedent of Central Services, said Tuesday the city aims to contract to replace the roof on the city-owned building at 18 W. Benton. The roof of the building, which was the old Aurora Post Office, has leaked for years, he said.
Under a federal General Services Administration procurement contract, the city would contract with Ohio-based Tremco/Weatherproofing Technologies Inc. for $199,947. Tremco would then subcontract the work to Aurora-based Olsson Roofing Company, Anderson said.
Local funds would come from Tax Increment Financing District 1 money.
An infared test of the existing roof shows that 35 percent of the structure is water damaged, according to Anderson.
The completed new roof will have a 15-year warranty.
The city has owned the 18 W. Benton building since the 1990s, Anderson said. As of 2012, SciTech paid the city $2 per year to rent the old post office: $1 for the parking lot and $1 for the building.
