An instructor at Fox Valley Career Center in Maple Park was burned in an accidental gas engine fire Tuesday and airlifted by helicopter to an area burn unit, Kaneland School District officials said.
Kaneland Superintendent Jeff Schuler said paramedics were called shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday to respond to a non-life threatening accident involving a staff member in a lab class. No one else was injured in the incident.
The Fox Valley Career Center is a multi-jurisdictional career and technical training program located on the Kaneland High School campus in Maple Park.
Schuler said first responders determined the staff member should be airlifted by helicopter to a hospital burn unit.
One other person said the staff member was able to walk out of the building on his own. A Lifestar Chicago helicopter landed on the east side of Kaneland High School to take the instructor to the hospital.
All Fox Valley feeder schools were notified of the incident and were asked to check on and provide support to students who may have been around the accident scene.
