Woman scares off robbers with her cane

A 65-year-old woman scared off two potential robbers by swinging her cane at them early Tuesday morning as she walked to her car, police said.
The victim said two suspects came out from behind some bushes around 6:21 a.m. while she walked in the 700 block of North Gladstone. The suspects demanded the woman’s purse, but fled on foot after she swung her cane towards them, police said.
Someone smashed the window of a business, causing $978 in damages, sometime between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday in the 300 block of Weston Avenue, police said.
Jeremy Sherman, 25, 800 block of Pearl Street, Aurora, was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance at 3:24 a.m. Wednesday after he was stopped while driving near South Elmwood Drive and West Downer Place, police said. Sherman was wanted on an active warrant, and was placed under arrest when officers smelled what they thought was marijuana in his car. A search turned up several prescription pills hidden in the dashboard of Sherman’s car, police said.
Jaime Medina, 42, 400 block of Watson Street, Aurora, was charged with three counts of felony drunken driving at 12:45 a.m. Monday after police stopped him for speeding near Montgomery Road and Pleasant Place, police said. Police said this is Medina’s third drunken driving charge. He was also cited for driving on a suspended license and no insurance.
Four cars were damaged, and a GPS unit was stolen, sometime between 10:30 p.m. Saturday and midnight Sunday while the vehicles were parked in the 600 and 700 blocks of Wacker Drive in Yorkville, deputies said.
Isaac Ruiz, 31, 100 block of Laurie Lane, Oswego, was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia after he was stopped for speeding at 4:33 p.m. Sunday near Fernwood Road and Hunter Drive in Montgomery, deputies said.
Grant Towner, 26, of Sheridan, was charged with drunken driving, improper lane usage, and illegal transportation of alcohol at 11:31 p.m. Friday near Route 71 and East High Point Road, police said.
