Aurora mom gets probation for ordering daughter to fight

Updated: April 4, 2013 6:26AM

An Aurora mother has pleaded guilty to instructing her daughter to beat up another girl in an attack later posted on YouTube.

Hattie Orlu, 28, of the 1200 block of Second Avenue, admitted to one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor Thursday as part of a plea deal with Kane County prosecutors, who dropped an aggravated battery charge stemming from the April 2012 incident.

Prosecutors said Orlu encouraged her daughter to pick a fight with the other girl while they were at Marie Wilkinson Park at Loucks Street and Galena Boulevard. Orlu was sentenced to 30 months of probation, given credit for 30 days in the Kane County Jail and must take a parenting class.

“This defendant actually instructed her daughter to batter the victim,” Assistant State’s Attorney Dave Belshan told Judge Barsanti. “It turned into a physical altercation.”

Belshan added that video of the incident, which later appeared on YouTube, shows Orlu’s daughter — at her mother’s urging — pushing the victim eight times and then punching the girl as many as 20 times.

Orlu, who has no previous criminal history, requested lower probation fees because she is not working and expects to have a hard time finding a job as a result of the felony conviction, her public defender said. Orlu could have faced a minimum of two years in prison.
